Chungjang Street Festival of Recollection Brings Retro Flair to Gwangju’s Historic District
Next month, Dong-gu’s bustling Geumnam-ro corridor will once again transport visitors back to Korea’s vibrant 1970s and ’80s with the annual Chungjang Street Festival of Recollection. Centered on 226-22 Geumnam-ro, this three-day celebration invites both locals and travelers to stroll the neon-lit thoroughfare, sample street-stall classics and enjoy live performances under the city lights.
A Taste of Nostalgia
Festivalgoers can browse rows of vintage vendors hawking vinyl records, antique radios and second-hand cameras, while food stalls dish up tteokbokki, twigim (Korean-style fritters) and other legendary snacks from decades past. Pop-up cafés recreate old-school interiors complete with rotary phones and black-and-white photographs, making every sip of sweet yuzu tea or instant coffee feel like a scene from an earlier era.
Music and Performance Lineup
Daytime programming includes folk and trot singers who rose to fame in the 1970s, alongside modern bands interpreting classic tunes. As dusk settles, street corners become stages for retro dance crews and impromptu karaoke sessions. Traditional storytellers, known as “pansori” masters, will also perform short entertaining excerpts, offering a living link to Korea’s performing-art heritage.

The festival unfolds along Geumnam-ro in Dong-gu, easily accessible by city buses and just a short walk from City Hall Station. Admission is free; individual workshop and performance fees range from ₩2,000 to ₩5,000. Nighttime events begin at 6 p.m., with market stalls opening as early as 10 a.m.; all activities wrap up by 10 p.m. daily.
