Discover Chojeong Haenggung: A Historic Gem in Cheongju

Chojeong Haenggung, the former temporary palace of Joseon monarchs, has emerged as a must-visit destination for history enthusiasts and nature lovers alike. Located at 851 Chojeongyaksu-ro in Cheongwon-gu, Cheongju, this carefully restored site offers a rare opportunity to step back into 16th-century royal life.

Originally established during King Seonjo’s reign as a resting and administrative quarters when the court relocated due to Japanese invasions, Chojeong Haenggung retains its historic charm through its elegant wooden pavilions, curved tile roofs and shaded courtyards. Visitors enter through the main gate and proceed to the central courtyard, where the king and his entourage once held official ceremonies. Surrounding the complex are quiet walking paths that wind through groves of century-old gingko and maple trees, making every season—from spring blossom to autumn foliage—an especially scenic time to visit.

A standout feature is the pavilion built above a natural spring, whose clear waters were prized by Joseon royalty for their reputed healing qualities. Today, guests can sip from the same spring and enjoy the tranquil ambience while listening to water trickle over moss-covered stones. Interpretive panels and guided-tour options shed light on the site’s strategic importance and architectural details, such as the ondol underfloor heating system still visible beneath one of the guest quarters.
